10/20/2016 Update: Spike was ADOPTED!!! It is with great pleasure that we announce Mr. Spike has found his forever home. Spike’s new dad was approved to adopt a bulldog the same day that Spike came into rescue.  His Dad knew Spike was the one, but Spike had several medical issues that needed to be addressed before he was ready to be adopted. After palate and nare surgery,  Spike’s initial foster family was unable to continue to foster him due to a change in their travel schedule.  Since Spike’s new Dad had already met him and knew he “was the one”, we asked if he would temporarily foster him until we could find a new foster home. Well, there was such a bond that his new Dad not only nursed him back to health from the two initial surgeries but did the same when Spike needed his tail amputated.  During this time, Spike had a seizure and this really was heartbreaking for his dad. But after much thought and soul searching he knew that he and Spike were meant to be together and he would do everything in his power for Spike.

What can we say…. Spike hit the jackpot with his new Dad. They are two peas in a pod and do everything together.

Congratulations are definitely in order for both of them, as they make the perfect family.

8/17/2016 Update: Please welcome Spike to the No Borders Bulldog Rescue family.  Spike is a 2.5 year old male English Bulldog that was an owner surrender.  Spike has health issues that made it impossible for his previous family to afford the care that he needed.  They made the very difficult decision to surrender him so he could get the care he needed. It was apparent that Spike was very much loved and well cared for (he arrived with a basket full of medicines and supplies).

The first and foremost issue that needed to be addressed with Spike was his breathing. Spike was a very hard and labored breather, combine that with his tendency to get VERY excited at new situations and things sometimes didn’t go well. Spike was rushed to the emergency vet multiple times due to his lack of breathing.  In addition to Spike’s breathing issues, he appears to have some underlying allergies.

The first stop that Spike made after joining rescue was to the clinic for Dr. H to do an assessment to  determine what exactly he needed.  As expected, Spike needed surgery to shorten his palate and enlarge his nares (nostrils). Both of these “adjustments” and a neuter surgery were performed on Monday.  The surgeries were a HUGE success and Spike’s breathing improved immediately.  He still gets excited and is a “heavy” breather but now he can breath easier and it appears that he is smelling better (since he stops to sniff EVERYTHING now).

Spike is now resting comfortably in his foster home where he is the only dog and is getting a lot of one on one time with his foster dad.  Spike will be eating a soft diet for the next several days to make it easier on his palate.  In addition to the soft diet, he will be on antibiotics to ward off any infection and pain medication to keep him comfortable.

Spike has a GREAT personality and has a lot of “puppy” energy even though he is 2.5 years old. He gets along well with other dogs and humans of all sizes, a true southern gentleman. Once off of medical hold (approximately a 7-10 days) Spike will start his journey to find his forever home. With his charm and good looks….we know how this story will end and we are betting the journey will be short one.
